Saltwater Durability & Corrosion Protection

The M50 Water Dragon is built with materials chosen for harsh marine environments. The following reflects manufacturer-specified construction and care guidance — always consult the Tecniq spec sheet and your warranty documentation for full details.

Corrosion-Resistant Construction

  • 316 Stainless Steel Covers — Grade 316 (marine-grade) polished stainless steel covers provide superior corrosion resistance compared to standard 304 SS, making them well-suited for saltwater exposure.
  • Anodized Die-Cast Aluminum Body — The anodized finish adds an oxide layer that resists corrosion in wet environments.
  • TecSeal Urethane Potting — The circuit board is fully encapsulated in TecSeal urethane, protecting electronics from moisture intrusion.
  • Surface-Mount Design — The low-profile surface mount eliminates the need for large through-hull holes, reducing potential water ingress points at the mount.

Connector & Wiring Care in Saltwater Environments

  • Use only marine-rated, tinned-copper wire connections. Salt water accelerates corrosion at bare copper splices and terminals.
  • Apply dielectric grease to all wire connectors before sealing to prevent oxidation and connector failure — a common cause of lighting issues in saltwater boats.
  • Seal all wire connections with heat-shrink solder connectors or adhesive-lined heat shrink. Standard electrical tape is not adequate in a submerged or spray environment.
  • Route wiring to avoid standing water pockets where salt deposits can concentrate.

Installation Precautions

  • The M50 is a surface-mount underwater light designed for submerged use in the mounting configuration specified by Tecniq. Do not alter the mounting depth or orientation beyond manufacturer guidelines.
  • Ensure the approximately 5/8" wire exit hole is properly sealed at the hull with a marine-grade sealant (e.g., 3M 5200 or equivalent) to prevent water intrusion into the boat interior.
  • After installation, confirm no wiring is pinched or abraded at the mount edge — chafed insulation in a saltwater environment accelerates corrosion and can cause shorts.
  • Do not operate the light out of water for extended periods; surface-mount LEDs rely on the surrounding water for heat dissipation (thermal overheat protection will activate if overheated).

Periodic Inspection Cadence

  • Every season (or before launching): Inspect the 316 SS covers for pitting or white salt deposits. Clean with fresh water and a soft cloth. Re-apply a light coat of corrosion inhibitor (e.g., Boeshield T-9 or equivalent) to metal surfaces.
  • Every season: Check all wire connectors and terminals for green or white oxidation. Replace corroded connections promptly — do not simply clean and reuse heavily corroded terminals in a saltwater environment.
  • After any grounding or impact event: Inspect the lens and body for cracks or seal damage before returning the light to service.
  • Every 2–3 years or as recommended by Tecniq: Have a certified marine electrician verify wiring integrity and mounting seal condition.

Warranty Boundaries

The following is general guidance — refer to Tecniq's current warranty documentation for full terms.

  • Warranty coverage typically applies to manufacturer defects in materials and workmanship under normal use conditions.
  • Corrosion or damage resulting from improper wiring, failure to use marine-grade connectors, or installation outside Tecniq's specified guidelines is generally not covered.
  • Physical damage, modification of the housing or potting, or use outside the rated voltage range (9–30V DC) may void warranty protections.
  • Contact Tecniq directly or your authorized dealer for warranty claims and to confirm current warranty terms before purchase.
